This private two-day tour from Yogyakarta combines cultural sites with a visit to one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. The first day is dedicated to Borobudur Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, where you walk through terraces lined with reliefs and Buddha statues. The route continues to Prambanan Temple, a Hindu complex with temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma.
On the second day, the focus shifts to the slopes of Mount Merapi. Before sunrise, you head out in 4WD jeeps across lava fields and areas shaped by past eruptions. Stops include the “Alien Stone” and the Museum Sisa Hartaku, which offers insight into local life and volcanic activity.
In the evening, you return to Jambuluwuk Hotel, with time to rest after the day’s visits.
Morning transfer
Early in the morning, around 08:00 AM, a guide from Java Tours will meet you at Yogyakarta airport.
Tour program
You will head to the Prambanan temple complex and learn about its history. You’ll walk around the grounds and explore individual temples, including the main Shiva temple, which features many bas-reliefs depicting deities and animals, as well as learn about the daily life of Javanese people in the 9th century.
Next, you will visit the Sultan's Palace, Kraton. This is an entire complex with squares, streets, a mosque, shops and stalls, a music and dance pavilion, an armory, stables, and a palace museum. Take photos of the decorated ceremonial gates and the old platform, walk through the inner rooms of the palace and the local streets and shops.
After that, you will go to Borobudur temple. Beforehand, you can enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants. Then you will have an exciting tour of the ancient temple. You will walk through all its levels and admire the unique architecture. The bas-reliefs on the walls tell the story of Buddhism. On the upper platform, there are 72 small bell-shaped stupas and one main central stupa. Each stupa has special diamond-shaped openings through which you can see the Buddha statues hidden inside. According to legend, those who touch the fingers of the statue will be blessed with happiness and good luck. Enjoy the surrounding natural scenery and take stunning photos of the temple against the backdrop of tropical forest and mountains.
