Mount Agung trekking tour

Volcanoes

Mount Agung, Bali's highest peak at 3,142 meters (10,308 feet), is a stunning active volcano that locals revere as the "Great Mountain" where gods are believed to dwell. With its rich array of legends, Mount Agung is thought to protect Bali from dark forces and is considered the island's spiritual heart. Its imposing presence is visible from almost anywhere on the island and always leaves a lasting impression.

Embarking on a climb of Mount Agung is a demanding adventure, even for those in peak physical condition. The ascent involves navigating a steep, rocky slope with a 45-degree angle and takes between 4 to 6 hours, with a similar time required for the descent. Expect to put your knees to the test!

But the reward is extraordinary: witnessing the sunrise from the summit of the "Great Mountain" is truly unforgettable. Above the clouds, where the gods are said to reside, you'll see the sun rise and illuminate the land with its first rays—a truly magical experience. At the top, you can also gaze into the volcano's crater, where the unique spatial perception makes it difficult to judge its vastness and depth.

Join us for this once-in-a-lifetime experience and also explore the peaks of Mount  Batur, Ijen and Bromo. Be among the first on the planet to marvel at some of the most breathtaking sunrises!

What to expect

Transfer to the Volcano

Transfer, provided by «Bali Happy» transport company, arrives at a scheduled time. You should wait for the car at the reception of the hotel or in front of the villa. When everyone gathers, the trip to the bottom of Mount Agung starts. The guide will meet you at the parking lot. He provides you with flashlights for the hike.

Climbing Mount Agung

Climbing Mount Agung starts at midnight from Pura Pasar Agung. The path will bring you up to 3142 meters above sea level. It takes around 4.5 to 5.5 hours to get to the summit. You will make a first break after 45 minutes of trekking. The subsequent number of stops during the trek depends on the physical stamina of the participants. In the first two hours you will complete two-thirds of the way. The rest is the most difficult part of the trek - a steep rocky slope with a 48 degree angle and the elevation gain of 1500 meters.

At dawn you will reach the top of the volcano. Light sweet snacks will be served for you here - chocolate snacks, fried bananas and hot coffee or tea. You will have an hour to enjoy the breathtaking view and take photos. Then you will start your way back to the bottom, which also takes around 4.5 to 5.5 hours. The driver will meet you at the parking area.

  • there is a small local store at the trek starting point, where you can buy mineral water and snacks before the ascent. Payment can be made in cash only;

  • people with joint and heart diseases are not recommended to climb the volcano.

Great team of organizers and guides. Quick and efficient help, everything is as fast and clear as possible. We got a very cool guide, spoke English well, listened to our wishes, treated us to delicious coffee and snacks, overall everything was great! We were lucky with the weather in the rainy season; on the ascent, there was a slight drizzle, and then it stopped. There were some clouds at the top, but that's the charm of it. And the view of the sunrise volcano is something incredible. Definitely recommended. P.S. the only downside for us is that we are athletes and seemed to be climbing relatively briskly (even though we could go faster, but the guide recommended not rushing:)), which led to very long stops (breaks) lasting half an hour or more - you have time to get cold). It's understandable that this is done to maintain the schedule and arrive at the summit by sunrise, not to sit there for 2 hours and get even colder. So if you adequately evaluate your strength and understand that 7 km and 2000 m elevation gain in 7 hours is too slow for you (in our estimation, 4.5-5 hours is perfectly normal), you might try leaving later. P.P.S. for comparison, the descent took 3 hours.

Everything was very cool! We really enjoyed it. It was difficult, interesting, sometimes we had to overcome ourselves! But if you want to see Bali from a bird's eye view - you need to do it! Out of all my hikes, this one is 10 out of 10 in terms of difficulty, but it was worth it!

Of course, I enjoyed the climb as I planned and eagerly awaited it, and most importantly, we were lucky with the weather. The organization was top-notch, the driver (transfer) deserved a 5+, very client-oriented, pleasant to talk to, and we were also lucky with the guide - reliable and knowledgeable about all the ins and outs in emergencies, thanks to which we almost managed to get back without rain; we just got caught by a little rain, which was a nice bonus. Thank you for everything!
