Gunung Kawi Temple

One of the oldest archaeological complexes on Bali, carved directly into the rock. This temple complex includes ten giant niche-tombs, which historians believe served as tombs for Balinese rulers of the 11th century. Surrounding the complex are picturesque rice terraces, creating the feeling of stepping into another era. According to legend, the temples were carved in just one night by a mythical giant. To reach the complex, one must descend a hundred steps down to the river.
This is one of the key historical monuments of the island, allowing one to see what Bali was like in the era of its first kingdoms.
