Malasigi: Wildlife & Birds of Paradise Journey

Papua

Beyond Bali
Exclusive

West Papua is one of Indonesia’s most remote and least explored regions, visited by only a small number of travelers each year. Hidden within the ancient rainforests of the Vogelkop Peninsula lies an almost untouched ecosystem that has remained preserved for thousands of years. This region is home to hundreds of rare animal species and the world-famous birds of paradise — unique creatures found only in this part of the planet. This expedition is designed for travelers seeking to discover a completely different side of Indonesia: wild, authentic, and far removed from mass tourism.

One of the main highlights of this journey is the opportunity to observe Papua’s legendary birds of paradise in their natural habitat, exactly where they live and perform their famous mating rituals. At the same time, this expedition offers far more than wildlife observation alone. Over the course of the program, you will take part in night walks in search of rare nocturnal animals, trek through dense tropical rainforest, explore hidden caves, relax in natural hot springs deep within the jungle, and experience traditional fishing alongside local villagers. You will also have the opportunity to discover the culture of the Moi Kelim people, who continue to carefully preserve the traditions passed down by their ancestors.

The defining feature of this expedition is its complete authenticity. Throughout the journey, you will be accompanied by local residents who know this region better than anyone else, group sizes remain intentionally small, and the entire program is built around respect for both nature and local communities. There are no artificial tourist attractions here — only the rare opportunity to spend several days immersed in one of Indonesia’s last truly untouched natural regions and experience a world that remains largely unchanged by modern tourism.

What to expect

Day 1 — First Introduction to Papua and the Nature of Malasigi Region

Morning: Upon arrival at Sorong Airport, you will be met by a local representative who will begin your transfer to Malasigi village — a remote settlement surrounded by the untouched landscapes of West Papua. Even the journey itself offers a first impression of how dramatically this region differs from Indonesia’s more familiar tourist destinations.

Afternoon: Upon arrival in the village, you will be welcomed with the traditional Allen Dance ceremony — an important part of local culture that has remained carefully preserved for generations. After the ceremony, lunch will be served, followed by check-in at a traditional village homestay, where you will have time to rest after the journey and settle into the atmosphere of Papuan village life.

Post-Lunch: In the afternoon, you will explore natural caves located near the village and take a walk through the surrounding area. This part of the program allows you to discover Papua’s dense tropical vegetation, unusual landscapes, and one of Indonesia’s most remote ecosystems.

Evening: After dinner in the village, the program continues with a night walk through the forest in search of local wildlife. Accompanied by a guide, you may encounter nocturnal birds, tree-dwelling mammals, and other forest species that become active after sunset.

Day 2 — Birds of Paradise, Hot Springs, and Moi Kelim Cultural Experience

Morning: Early in the morning, you will experience one of the most important moments of the journey — observing Papua’s famous Birds of Paradise, which attract wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world. Together with a local guide, you will hike through the forest toward their natural habitat to observe these rare birds in the wild. After birdwatching, the route continues to Belempe Hot Springs, where you can relax in natural thermal waters surrounded by tropical nature.

Afternoon: Return to the village for lunch and a short rest before continuing the day’s activities.

Post-Lunch: The second half of the day is dedicated to learning about the culture of the Moi Kelim people — one of the indigenous communities of the region. You will observe the traditional process of making Noken bags, an important part of Papuan cultural heritage, and spend time alongside local residents learning more about their everyday lifestyle.

Evening: After dinner, you will take part in the traditional Balobe Fishing Experience. Together with local villagers, you will learn an ancient fishing method that has been passed down through generations and remains an important part of local daily life.

Day 3 — Final Wildlife Observation and Return to Sorong

Morning: On the final day of the journey, you will return once again to the observation area for another opportunity to see Papua’s famous Birds of Paradise. Early morning remains the best time for observing wildlife and photographing these rare birds in their natural habitat.

Afternoon: After returning to the village, lunch will be served, followed by a short rest and preparation for departure. After check-out from the homestay, the return transfer to Sorong will begin, marking the conclusion of your journey through one of Indonesia’s most remote natural regions.

Important information:

  • wildlife observation largely depends on weather conditions, therefore animal sightings cannot be guaranteed;

  • the provider recommends choosing flights operated by Garuda Indonesia. If you are not planning to stay overnight in Sorong before the tour, you must arrive in Sorong no later than 2:00 PM on the day the program begins. At the moment, there are no direct flights from Bali to Sorong — flights are available only via Jakarta.

Exploring Nature, Birds, and Heritage in Malasigi

I’d wanted to visit Papua for a long time specifically for birdwatching, and this trip is definitely something I’ll remember for a long time. You should understand right away that this is nothing like a typical tour. You’re actually out in the wild here, waking up early, walking through the forest, listening to every sound around you and constantly waiting to spot something. What impressed me the most was finally seeing birds of paradise in real life. I’d seen photos and videos so many times before, but it’s a completely different feeling when you’re actually standing somewhere deep in the forests of Papua watching all of this with your own eyes. I also really enjoyed the night safari, that was a very unusual experience. And I especially liked spending a few days in the village itself, seeing how people live in such a remote part of Indonesia. Trips like this really make you look at everyday life a little differently afterwards.

Exploring Nature, Birds, and Heritage in Malasigi

I went on this trip with my girlfriend, but honestly this one was something I’d wanted to do for a long time myself. I’ve been into birdwatching for years, have already been to Costa Rica for it, spent time looking for birds on other islands around Indonesia too, but Papua had always been somewhere high on my list. Mostly because I’d heard so much about birds of paradise and really wanted to see them exactly here. At first my girlfriend was mostly joining because she knows how much I’m into this stuff, but I think even she ended up genuinely enjoying it. It’s hard not to when you’re standing in the middle of the forest early in the morning, everything around you is alive, you hear sounds from everywhere and suddenly the guide quietly points somewhere and there it is. What I really liked is that the trip turned out to be much more than just birdwatching. The night safari was great, staying in the village was really interesting, talking to local people, seeing a completely different side of Indonesia. For me this was honestly one of the most memorable wildlife trips I’ve done, and for my girlfriend I think it was a pretty good introduction into why I’ve always loved traveling like this.
