Batik Painting Workshop in Bali

Workshop

Batik in Bali is much more than the colorful fabrics you see in shops and local markets. Behind every pattern is meticulous craftsmanship, and the tradition of batik-making has been passed down through generations. During the workshop, you will discover this art firsthand and follow the entire process, from the first pencil sketch to the finished piece.

Under the guidance of an experienced artisan, you will create your own design, learn how to use traditional tools and dyes, and watch as colors, details, and character gradually appear on the fabric. Even if you have never drawn before, the process is easy to follow and engaging from the very beginning — enjoying the creative experience matters far more than having artistic skills.

At the end of the workshop, you will take home your own batik piece, created by you in Bali. More than just a souvenir from the island, it will be a unique piece connected to the time you spent creating it and to your own experience in Bali.

Main Programme

The workshop opens with an introduction to the traditional art of batik — the materials, the tools and the centuries-old techniques behind it. Your instructor will demonstrate how to handle the canting, a special pen-like tool used to apply hot wax to fabric. These wax lines form the outlines of your design and keep the dyes from bleeding into one another.

Next comes the most creative stage — painting the fabric. Working with brushes, you will gradually fill in your drawing using two or three colours, blending shades and bringing your own pattern to life. Once the painting is finished, the instructor removes the wax and completes the final treatment of the fabric.

The result is your very own batik, measuring 50 × 50 cm, which you take home with you as a handmade souvenir.

Important information:

  • a 50 × 50 cm piece of cotton fabric is provided for your work.

  • two to three colours are used in the painting technique.

  • your finished batik is yours to keep.

  • every participant receives a certificate at the end of the workshop.

  • mineral water or tea is served during the class.

Batik Class: Brushing method

In Bali there isn't all that much choice when it comes to activities for kids, so my daughter and I go to various workshops from time to time. So far batik has been her favorite. She loves to draw, and here she could pick out the design herself, color it in, and generally take part in the whole process. My daughter was absolutely delighted and did almost everything herself — I only helped a little. Of course, the instructors gave tips too, especially when something wasn't working out. In the end the batik turned out really beautiful, it was almost a shame to roll it up. Now my daughter shows her work to everyone and says that she made it herself in Bali. For children who love to draw, it's a really great activity.

Batik Class: Brushing method

We went to a workshop with my friends — I wanted to bring back some unusual, handmade souvenir from Bali. It turned out to be really interesting, although a bit difficult in places. I think it would be easy for anyone who draws well, but I draw about as well as a chicken scratching with its foot, and I still managed just fine. I chose a design with fish. Of course, it didn't come out perfect, but in the end it was even better than I expected. The instructors helped out wherever I really couldn't manage, so I'm very happy with the result. Now I'll have a real Balinese batik at home that I made myself, and that's far more interesting than yet another souvenir from a shop.
