The Nest

"The Nest" is a mesmerizing underwater installation located in the crystal-clear waters off the west coast of Gili Meno. The spot features a circular composition of 48 life-sized sculptures, forming a symbolic ring of life on the ocean floor. Created by world-renowned sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, this project serves as both an art piece and an artificial reef: the pH-neutral cement figures gradually become encrusted with coral, attracting thousands of tropical fish.
The statues are set at a depth of 4–5 meters, making them accessible even without professional diving gear. Through a snorkeling mask, the figures appear surreal and lifelike as sunlight filters through the water. Those who dive down to the base can observe the intricate details of the faces and textures already touched by marine flora, creating a unique contrast between human art and the wild beauty of the ocean.
